you can root and get wireless tether.

I hope you have the unlimited data plan if you do want to do this, you can rack up data quite fast by tethering.

The 3G WiFi works well for computers or even the Color Nook. PdaNet is terrific for wired tethering. It used to be available in the Market, but Verizon complained. Now you can get it on the internet. Good app--vast number of users.

You might be able to do z4root or easyoneclick root. When I rooted my friend's X2 I think I used superoneclick and it was an apk file you put onto your phone and then run it through your phone. Once it's done your phone is rooted, it was quick, easy, and painless.
