need help with root~

I recently 'rooted' my phone, but I don't have any root access. I followed a guide on youtube, but basically this is what I did. I went to htcdev to unlock my loader, after that I flashed clockwork recovery, then using clockwork recovery I installed super user. I thought I was done so I started using my phone, and while super user was there, and everything looked fine, I do not have actual root access. i used 2 root checker apps and they all checked negative, and I downloaded gamecih2 (app that requires root) to try it out, and that didnt work either. Any help? I took it upon myself (probably screwed my self over) to go into clockwork mod and re-install another Super User app and see if that worked, so far it didnt, and now anything that tries to check root just freezes. Help anyone? I've been at this for 4 hours
