A Friendly Rooting Guide - Plus Useful Tips!

The link I'm providing in this post is the easiest way to get your phone rooted. Its a little rich in content, so take in what you can understand and don't sweat the rest. Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

Once you have completed the steps to getting your phone rooted, take a look at an app called Rom Manager by ClockworkMod. The icon looks like a black gear with an orange ring in the middle wearing a top hat. (get it? clockwork...orange...) It's a couple bucks for the premium, but WAY worth it. This is the most user friendly app by far for customizing your rooted phone with roms. you can download your ultimate droid from there. I know your pretty savvy at digging deep and finding all the fun and interesting stuff that you can understand, so get going down that path and then get back to me once you have any questions!

When downloaded a custom ROM is it automatically applied? Also, when should i back up and flash recoverys? Im real new to this, just got rooted.

You need to backup BEFORE you apply a new ROM.

I tend to have compete backups. ie I have a complete rooted stock froyo with overclocking kernel. it contains all my programs, settings, etc. Just flash and I have a complete OS with everything installed. It takes up 800+mb on my sd card but is a vital time saver. always back up before flashing a new rom!

Flash recovery, make a backup, install ROM.

You don't have to but if you want to underclock/overclock you need a different kernel.

you should be able to get 800mhz with the stock kernel. I recommend keeping it at that and getting to know your fone better before flashing kernels and roms. If you flash a slayher kernel on your stock froyo and do not apply the wifi bootloop fix you will be stuck in an endless bootloop once you try to enable wifi.
