Planning on rooting Droid 1

Hello world,
I have a Droid 1 running 2.2 FRG22D. I figured I might as well root it now that my warranty is voided anyway (tiny crack going across the screen). So I was just wanting to aska couple of questions.

Some things you should know:
-I have access to a Mac and a PC
-I want the quickest and most pain free way to do this
-I have never rooted an android phone before
-Have a lot of experience with unlocking, jailbreaking, and installing android, all on iPhones.
-Don't generally consider myself a "noob" at this stuff, but would like your guys' help with this.

So here are my questions:
1.What is the easiest way to do this?
-Mac or PC
2.What is PC mode?
-When I plug into USB I only get the option to "turn on USB storage" -- nothing about PC mode

Please post very descriptive methods to do this. Whether you are posting links or pasting it right into this thread, it would be great if these procedures were clear down to the last detail.

Is there a way to backup a stock 2.2 system before rooting, in case something goes wrong in the rooting process??
