Stock music player removal

Is there any way to remove the stock music player and set another as default? I just downloaded winamp and have no intentions of going back to stock so its just taking up space. Any help is appreciated!

Let me start by saying yes you can IF you are rooted.

I wouldn't recommend removing it completely as it can lead to problems down the road and I believe it only takes up about 1MB, if I were to suggest anything it would be to rename the Music.apk to something like Music.BAK or something of that nature. This would require you to rooted as you are editing files in the /system/app folder. By doing this the app will be removed from your phone but will still occupy about 1MB of storage.

I'm rooted on ss4.8 and he has a tool to remove some system files but not the music player.

Also if I remember correctly you can't just change the extension, you need special permission that I don't know how to gain access to. Can it be done through terminal emulator?

You can use terminal emulator (although I can't remember the precise commands but we can track them down need be)

you can use rootexplorer, it's like astro or any other file explorer except it can mount any of your system folders Read/Write giving you the ability to edit anything how you see fit.

While root explorer makes this very easy it also make it very easy to screw things up so be careful and remember that Nandroid is your friend(regardless of your method).

rootexplorer is also a paid app, couple bucks at the most though truthfully I don't remember because it's such a priceless app for root users.

I was having this issue with Twitter and with Amazon MP3. I couldn't remove them, got Root Explorer and renamed them with no issue. However, can I just remove them completely without any problem. If I just delete the renamed apk files will it mess up anything?

The only issue I found was after renaming the music.apk to music.bak my WinAmp Widget would give me the Problem Loading Widget Error. I switch it back to music.apk and uninstall/reinstall Winamp and all is good.
