most inclusive root thread/includes unrooting procedures and blocking future OTA
first, this is just a simple goto page for anything dealing with the update, rooting, unrooting, and blocking future OTA updates
first off, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING. DAMAGE TO YOUR PHONE, WORLD WAR, STARVING KIDS IN AFRICA, OR BRICKED PHONES...DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING!
that being said, this is all pretty simple
1) MANUALLY UPDATE TO 2.0.1(this can be used to unroot also)
1 - Download file. 2.0.1 android OS_update.zip
this is only here for people who want to revert! custom rom is being perfected, and i will continue to post the updated roms
3) ROOT (all in one file, doesnt require superuser permissions)
1 - Download file. root for droid.zip
2 - Rename the file to "update.zip".DO NOT USE .zip if your using windows vista/7
3 - Plug your Droid into your computer via USB. On the Droid go to the Notifications bar and select "USB Connected" then press "Mount".
4 - Once the device is mounted, the SD card will show as a removable device on your computer
5 - Put the "update.zip" file you just renamed into the Root (top) directory of your SD Card.
6 - Unmount the device from your computer, and turn the Droid off.
7 - Hold down the "X" key on the physical keyboard and while doing so press the power button. Hold both of them down until you see a Triangle with an !.
8 - Hold the Vol+ button then press the camera button and you will see a menu.
9 - Using the D-pad on the physical keyboard, select the option to update with the update.zip file.
10 - This should take a little bit. Once it's done select the option to reboot the phone.
11 - The phone will boot. now you have root
3)blocking OTA updates via terminal emulator this step should be null, as its in the custom rom i believe. do it anyway just to make sure.
open terminal emulator
enter exactly like this
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/etc/security
mv otacerts.zip otacerts.zip.bak
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
sync
reboot
once your phone reboots, and you followed all 3 steps, you are updated, rooted, and blocking future updates. credit for the files go to various people, including cellulararrest, etc. i just compiled everything.
ENJOY!!
UPDATED*** program to block old recovery, and install the latest recovery(use at least 14.3) thanks to crotalusfreak for this
install : http://www.alldroid.org/download/file.php?id=874
unzip, put tools folder onto the main(root) folder on your sdcard..
put the .apk in your apps folder, or on the main, doesnt matter.
download apps installer from the market. its free and very valuable, if you save your .apk's as you can simply load them onto the sdcard, open it and it finds them.
once you run the program, its self explanatory. dont forget to install and chmod busybox. to get the newest recovery, go here :www.sholes.info add the zip to tools folder and remove old one.
DO THE RECOVERY PROGRAM FIRST, BEFORE THE CUSTOM ROM.
YOU MUST BE ROOTED AND BLOCKING OTA UPDATES BEFORE ANY OF THIS.

okay i see how to root, but what does rooting really accomplish?
just kidding, nice synopsis of the method
custom roms here we come
-
i saw on alldroid.org, someone is getting a recovery image working, or at least working dilligently on it. i give it a week before we have an optimized 2.0.1 rom and recovery thats stable. cant wait! i would like to get the tethering app working, as my PDAnet is about to run out, and i really dont want to bother with a cracked older version
-
bump, this needs to stay up for the noobs
-
1 last noob question to clear it up. you have to hit enter after every line you typed out right? for the blocking OTA updates
-
What all is included in your all in one root file?
I used a BlackBerry for several years and I was obsessed with modding my phone. I used to build hybrid OS' and themes for BlackBerry's but Android is completely new to me and I really want to learn as much as possible about Android and modifications.
I rooted my Droid with the super user zip file.
The cmd prompt thing just doesn't seem to work for me. I've never used cmd prompt before so I haven't been able to get to far with that I always get permission denied. I wasn't able to push su or busybox to my phone so I had to do it the easy way.
Everyone has to start somewhere and it is driving me nuts that I can't do anything with cmd. I really want to get busybox installed and install the transparent status bar.
I read some of your posts in another thread and it sounded like you might be willing to help a newbie out so that's the reason for this long post.

yes enter after every line of commands
the all in one, eliminates the need for the superuser permissions crap. it works, no issues.
-
im not sure what you mean cmd prompt? you cant do it from your pc, just use terminal emulator, works perfect. any other questions, PM me
-
bump, added recovery image, and code for blocking old one

Again my Warning:
Rooting makes you loose warranty!! So if your phone runs well, and you just want to root it because you CAN, you should leave it. Also a manual Update can be risky as we know from some Milestones.
Be aware that DROIDFORUMS is CAN NOT be held responsible for damages you do to your DROID by rooting it.
