Rename to "update.zip" and copy to the sdcard

Power off the DROID and power back on while holding the X key
When you see a "/!\" symbol, press both vol+ and camera
Use the onscreen menu to install update.zip

Once installed you will be able to run "su" from your adb shell.

thaty was how to root it...now i need some explaining to normal mode

Ok, this has already been answered in about six different places, so i expect this to get cleaned up quickly, but here goes.

1. You only need to download one of the links, whichever one works for you, they're all the same file.
2. The SDCard is the removable memory card in your droid, when you connect it to a PC you have the option to mount it from the notifications window and put files on it.
3. SU is super-user, a command that lets you do just about anything on your phone/computer. Its essentially giving your phone Administrator access in Windows terms.
4. ADB is the android developers bridge and allows the pc to communicate to the phone through its debugging features. See the Android SDK for more info.
