Root just means your logging onto the Linux Operating System as an Admin!

Sorry to be nit-picky but this isn't true! Root is a level above admin.

Similar on Windows. Being an administrator is not rooting Windows. Running as the System account on Windows is the same as root on *nix.

Admin means you can do most everything but you'd still have to run su commands to do some things even in that capacity. Why? Because root != Admin.

I'm new to android, but I found this article very helpful in my decision to root my droid or to keep it stock. But I just have one question... and it may be a stupid question but here it goes... If I root my droid and I remove all the annoying stock apps (e.g. amazon, cityid, blockbuster or kindle) if I decide to un-root it, will all these apps return to my phone? I'm just curious... but thanks in advance for all the help!!

I already know what root is and have one rooted phone which I did a year ago using rootyourdroid.info. But I want to root my wife's Verizon Moto Droid which has been receiving the updates like the rest of the little people.

So I went back to that original site and found it's for sale. So I saw this thread and it's got a few broken links and another thread it links to which has more broken links.

Is it still applicable? I imagine she probably has 2.1 or 2.2--whichever Verizon is up to.

I have All android SDK versions(from 1.5 to 2.3.3), and i tried many methods for getting root in android emulator. I don't use any android device and test everything on emulator(AVD).

I need to get root access in any one of the android emulator to use the 'iptables' and 'busybox' functionality. And to use iptables i must have root access. Atleast 'su' command should execute in the terminal emulator.

I also installed 'z4root' application, but it takes very long time and doesn't finish rooting, and gets stuck. some say that if we downgrade the system to below RC30, this way we can get root access...if this is true, then how to do this, i use both linux and windows OS.

please someone tell me any method to root my emulator...

I had a rooted Droid which I used to tether my laptop when traveling. It worked very well.

Now I have a DroidX and I subscribed to the "hot spot" with verizon.
I am thinking about rooting in order to freeze the bloatware but am wondering if my hotspot app will still function.

You may wonder why I don't just root and tether as I did on my first Droid--about the 3rd time I used the tether app, I received an email from verizon telling me I needed to pay to tether. I know there is a discussion somewhere on this forum saying that verizon might or might not be able to tell if you tether (against their policy). I am pretty careful about staying legal but personally I saw no difference in using my data plan for my Droid or my laptop. However, I don't want to lose my cell phone plan completely so on the DroidX I decided to try their hot spot even though it costs me $20 more per month.

I have had the DroidX only a few days and can't believe the junk that is included. I guess the only way to get rid of the bloatware is to root but will I lose the hot spot function?
