It does christim, and I was talking to cvpcs who said its not enabled by default, but I couldn't get the commands to enable it before he went to his meeting. Hopefully when he gets done I can get it. I really want to try it.

I'm stuck at the bootubuntu step. When I type bootubuntu into terminal, it responds with sh:bootubuntu: not found.

Edit:fixed and working now, I had no luck with getting this to work on kangerade v1.1. After updating to Jrummy's newest 5.0.9 kangerade all worked like a charm. Maybe something to do with the roms build version? Anyway, Thanks alot for the guide.

What are the benefits of this? Just want to understand the reason behind it. It obviously can't still work as a phone after this, right?

    Will try then.

I was wondering if the default kernel with Sapphire supported ext2 or not, but it looks like it does

    from:
    releases:sapphire-0.8.4 [CVPCS Sapphire Wiki]0.4:
Switched to default android-omap-2.6.29-bekit_sapphire kernel [cvpcs]
    [bekit (base)]
provides overclocking of 250-1000mhz at low-voltage, is patched for
compcache support, and also includes the following modules:
cifs, ext2, ext3, ext4, fuse, isofs, jfs, nfsd, nfs, ntfs,

    ramzswap, reiserfs, squashfs, tiwlan_drv, xfs
KK, heres the deal. P3 took away the ability to load modules to add the new power governors. So, because of that, we can't load the ext2 module for this. Also, Chevy's kernels are incompatible with Sapphire because his expects a different firmware file to be on the phone than Sapphire has. Hence my bootloops. Guess it's not ubuntu droid for me

I really don't feel like loading another ROM either, lol.

You have to use chevy's kernels. I tried using one of P3's kernels and was getting the error above. Flashed chevy's, all is good.

With the way Chevy makes his kernels, it makes it uncompatible with Sapphire, which is my main rom. Now, though, cvpcs said that stock sapphire kernel (which of course i replaced) will work, but he is away now and i can't get the commands to activate the ext2 module. Once I get them I'll post it.

VNC is open source software that lets you connect to other computers and control them remotely. In this case we are going to spin up a copy of Ubuntu, a flavor of Linux, on our phone and connect to it from the phone to the phone, instead of off on another computer. That is why a port doesn't need to be opened...it is right there on the phone. There is no router involved.

Your phone is still functional. Notice the last step where you click your home icon, go to the app drawer and open the VNC app you downloaded to meet the list of required software at the top of the op.

As for why? Because it is there and it can be done

I have no idea what performance will be like. Your phone will be sharing resources with this spun up other OS. Depending on available resources it should be possible to run a variety of apps that run on Linux. VLC comes to mind. Games maybe?

It's also in playing around with this someone finds a way to get a usb storage device to feed into the phone, without hacking together a bunch of hardware.

99% of the time I'm going to watch a movie on the big screen at home. That doesn't mean it is any less cool that I can do it on my phone too.

crabs has it running. I'm sure he'll share some of what he's done once he got it spun up. What was done with it on the G1 and is there a big difference as to what you can do now on the droid?
    Chris

If you apply a rom or theme - backup first!
If you don't know how to backup...Stop until you do.
hint: I name my backups like this: sg6.0_20100428 or ss4.2_20100626 to easily find them later. rom and date.

You need to disable setcpu before your flash chevy's kernel.

    -I disabled setcpu.
    - flashed chevy's kernel.
    - did the ubuntu install
    - flashed p3's kernel
    - everything is working.

I dont know what it is about chevy's kernel and setcpu on my droid they just dont like each other. It may be different on others but this is just what I experienced.

I'm running UD 3.0. Each time you want to start ubuntu you have to open terminal and type these commands

    su (enter)
    bootubuntu (enter)
    vncstart (enter)

Now this is just like booting up linux on a PC so it takes a few minutes for everything to load.

Once I'm connected with VNC I have to wait about 1 to 2 minutes for the os to load and i'm running lxde.

Chevy's kernel looks for firmware that Sapphire doesn't have, so it hard boots almost instantly on bootup.
