What is considered wiping?

I see time & time again wiping recommended prior to a new rom install, by that does it refer to the "formatting" of the data, system, boot, cache while in recovery or are we talking doing a wipe data/factory reset? I thought if the latter is done it would resulting in needed to re-root the phone? Just a little unsure.

Actually, I believe you are right. It does remove root. All that is left is SPRecovery or CW recovery. However, recovery is all you need to get root back through a restore of a nandroid backup or flashing a new ROM.



Edit: I am completely wrong in my statement above. I just tested it out it and all that happened was my user apps are gone and I had to sign into my gmail account again. I still have root and my custom boot animation and theme are still intact.
