Rooting

I am new to this and have just being thinking about rooting my motorola droid. It is OS 2.1 and I have a mac computer but have access to a Windows 7 computer.
Is there any good guides out there on this or any helpful advice. I would like to root and overclock.

If you have access to a windows based computer I would recommend you use that. I have read that it is difficult to root the Droid using a Mac. Not impossible, just difficult.

If you are going to use your Mac I remember seeing a thread here on the forum where someone gave step-by-step instructions on how to do so on a Mac.

I have been rooted since I bought my phone in March. Everything I have ever read said you need root to flash a ROM. A guy I work with said he read that you only need SPRecovery and need NOT be rooted. He was trying to flash Simply Stunning today and it kept saying bad file. It recognized the update.zip but wouldn't flash. He has2.1 stock. Is it possible ? What are the steps? He backed up,wiped data and factory, now what? Nandroid restore or just install, allow install etc...
