There's a speedtest.net app you can use to test up/download speed before and after.

Looks like little to no difference... bummer. Looks like it's only when using tethering I suppose. Will test that later.

Im sorry if it's been answered already, but the voice quality change, what are you giving up in this change? From what I understand you're rolling back to an older technology for how the voice calls are processed, right? The benefit of rolling back is apparently an increase in sound quality. Well, why then did they set it to the newer version by default? Something must be gained by it. What is it?

I ran my own test with the both the 156.6/9.6 and the 153.6/153.6 data transfer settings on the Droid. I used the speedtest app to test the speed on the phone and the speedtest.net site/default test to run the tests on the computer. For the phone test I connected to the same Germantown, WI server each time, transferred a 1m file each time, and had a full signal strength indicator with a 3g connection each time. For the computer test I tethered using PDAnet using the same laptop, using Firefox as a browser, connecting to the same Germantown, WI server each time, and with a full signal strength indicator and a 3g connection each time. Latency for all tests ranged from 110ms to 144ms with the vast majority being in the 120s.

If you break that down it comes to default vs. modified setting for the phone data of 1184.75k/1082.66k DL and 270.5k/159.33k UL. For the tethering data is comes down to 1.66m/1.22m DL and .55m/.45m UL.
It is pretty close, but for me there seems to be a little bit of an edge to the default factory setting of 153.6/9.6 vs. changing it. I don't know why that would be true, perhaps hardware limitations of the phone or the network in my area, or something else... or it is just too close to call. I don't know enough to figure that out, but you can judge the results for yourself.
edit: For what it's worth I ran the same test on my laptop using my regular wi-fi and Time Warner cable ISP. I got 15ms latency, 16.08m DL, and .49 UL. The DL is obviously way better, but the UL speed is about the same... go figure.

It seems Verizon does not have every part of the country, 100% able to utilize EVRC-B yet... so if you travel into an area without EVRC-B support, you will not be able to make a phone call.
But TBH, if that ever happened, you could just easily switch it back to EVRC temporarily, then switch it back.

As stated I have talked to multiple reps on this matter, multiple supervisors, and gotten multiple reps from vzw on this site to tell me that the unlimited data plan for PHONE ONLY, is unlimited. I hate the way verizon's site is laid out because it allows for WAY too much misconception on this fact. I can only go by what has been told to me by the multiples on which have replied.
