Does the Droid really NEED to be "rooted"?
The more I use it the more I ask this question. Since Verizon/Motorola have pretty much let the phone be almost completely open, is there really a reason to root it? Without Rooting it, I can already: Tether, customize my interface, install apps from my SD card without the marketplace, change native apps for third party apps, and more.
All of those things above are what iPhone users want to do when they "jailbreak" the iPhone that can be done LEGALLY on Droid without "rooting" it. The ONLY think that I can think of that I might want to root it for is to be able to install programs on the SD card, but the more I've installed apps on my Droid, the more I've noticed that a lot of "heavy" apps dump the majority of their files on the SD card anyway and put the boot program on the internal memory to keep the footprint small so even the app thing isn't a biggie to me anymore.
I've just been wondering if rooting on an "Open" device is even really necessary anymore or if it's just a L33T thing to do.

I think...."Because it can be done" covers it all....

I need to add support for other fonts say Hebrew/Arabic/Farsi which doesn't seem possible now because I don't have write permission to the directory. Only way I can think of is being root.

How bout for those of us who want to keep the same ringtones, notification sounds when the Droid is mounted? I would love to put a few small soundfiles on my rooted Droid.

Rooting will allow for almost immediate modification of the browser to allow pinch-zoom. It will also allow flashing to cooked ROMs. I, for one, am interested to see what CyanoGen can do with 2.0. Hopefully he makes ROMs that work with Droid.

HAHAHAHA sorry... I couldn't resist to laugh at your response...
and apparently you couldn't resist to reply to the original post either.
I am not sure if I want to root my phone as of today... but you never know, you may find something really interesting that can only be done with a rooted phone, just make sure to keep on reading any news about this topic.
