Modifying the boot animation?

Hi all, has anyone tried to change the animation sequence at startup? I'm personally not a fan of the blinky red droid eye/light.

All I've found so far is a 'bootanimation.zip' in system/media, with what looks like each individual frame of the animation in it, along with some other stuff...haven't tried changing anything though, im not very computer-literate and don't want bust my phone yet.

it looks like it's just a series of jpgs played in sequence. I bet it would be super simple to change this. Although, I have not tried to see if the user has write access there.

I've tried changing one frame and then re-zipping it and replacing the old one...before I try and reboot, what's the worst that could happen? Should I try it anyway?

I would imagine, just like the rest of the system folder, that you don't have access to modify in that directory.

Yep, can't modify. I hope someone can figure this out at some point, the current one is just way too long and boring.

I guess if nothing else basic Droid gifs could be made with that zip file.

While the animation may be long and boring, i'm quite sure it still takes the phone just as long to actually go through the boot sequence. I would imagine that the animation is just there as a filler.
