Rooting Android 2.1 on a Mac

Hey guys,

I'm a total n00b to all of this, so I'm wondering if I can get some help. I'm wanting to root my Droid so I can tether it and create a WiFi hotspot with my phone. However, I just did the 2.1 OTA update which makes rooting complicated (at least to me, I acknowledge my stupidity on a lot of these things). I've seen that it is possible to root 2.1 using RSDLite, but that seems to be a Windows-only program. Is there a way to root 2.1 with a Mac so I can then tether my phone?

RSDlite has nothing to do with rooting your phone. All it does is allow you to flash an alternate .sbf file. In this case, you want 2.0.1 sbf. You need to flash back to that in order to root, because as far as I know. 2.1 OTA isn't rooted yet.

Ahh ... OK. Again, I'm dumb with these things. Forgive me if this is another stupid question, but is there any danger in flashing? Looking around I've seen some people claim it bricked their phone while others say it's a piece of cake. I'm sure someone will find a workaround to root 2.1 at some point, so should I just wait or should I risk it (if there is a risk at all?)

I did it myself. I got the 2.1 OTA the day it came out because I was curious, and I couldn't stand the fact that I couldn't customize anything or overclock. I was nervous doing it, but it worked fine, and was fairly simple. As far as bricking, if it's done right, it's impossible to brick your phone. But also, by using RSDlite, even if you brick your phone, you can fix it.

That's not entirely true, if you accepted the ota 2.1 update rsdlite is the only way to obtain a rooted 2.1
