I am on ota 2.1 and I am thinking about doing on one of the update.zip that allow you to overclock. My question is should I backup first, and if the answer is yes what should I use?

just use nandroid backup.
im trying to figure out how to get back to stock 2.1 OTA to get my vibrate when text working
You should ALWAYS backup!
If you are not rooted you do not have an option to do a nandroid backup.
Are you rooted?
If not, how do you want to proceed? RSD Lite or what? I mean...to use an update zip you'll need SPRecovery. To have SPRecovery you'll need soem level of root access.
If you are rooted and have SPRecovery installed, just download the kernel and change the name to update.zip...place it on your SC Card root directory and run SPRecovery as stated above.

Root and back up.
Back up.
once you make some significant changes that you like, back up.
change ROMs? Back up.
change themes? Back up.

got it. did not realize i had to root before i could install the roms. I thought the roms would root for you.
Not with OTA 2.1. Follow the thread Flashing SPRecovery SBF to Stock 2.1 to root it and you will then have SPRecovery on the phone which allows you to run a nandroid backup. Or install titanium backup from the market place and use that.
Also...you need the SPRcovery and root to be able o install with the update.zip. The stock recovery will reject the file as it won't have the correct checksum in the file.
