You don't need SDK to root. Only if you have updated to 2.1 if not and you have 2.0.1 then SDK is not needed to root

Use Astro to back up all your downloaded install programs. You might lose the data associated with the apps but you won't have to remember which is which and go download them again.

It also depends what you want to do once rooted. If you are keeping the same rom the link above (post 32) looks like it just gets you rooted with no loss of apps. If you are going to install a different rom, then you may have to reinstall some apps.

Third link in my sig tells you how to get back to stock.

If you apply a rom or theme - backup first!
If you don't know how to backup...Stop until you do.
hint: I name my backups like this: sg6.0_20100428 or ss4.2_20100626 to easily find them later. rom and date.

All contacts are stored with google. You always have an option to unroot your phone and go back to stock without losing apps or contacts in the process

I've had that happen and had it not happen. I'd back them up with Astro and if they come along for the ride and don't need reinstallation manually...good. If not you can easily reinstall from the sdcard with Astro. This would be a good poll/topic for a new thread to see what most folks experiences with this is. Once rooted there are other backup apps that grab all the data associated with the apps too.

Make a backup through recovery mode of your stock rom and settings if you choose to go back to stock.

    Tmac,
What is the SDK needed for? I've never installed it. Rooted 2.01. Went back to stock last week. OTA to 2.1 and then rerooted again on the same day to test some instructions. Never used SDK. There definitely are uses for it, but for someone just trying to root I think extra ingredients in the mix can just cause more confusion.

What do you do if you lose Astro for some odd reason, and it does not recover your apps. At least the recovery backup will insure nothing is lost except if you re partition your sd card

How would you get rid of sprecovery? Is there an update.zip that replaces sprecovery or clockwork with the stock boot-recovery app so your phone is totally stock again?

That happened to me. I backed up all my apps. I then deleted all my apps from the card....without unchecking Astro. Bye bye Astro. I felt sort of like the guy sitting on the wrong side of the branch with his chainsaw cutting the branch off the tree

I redownloaded it again. So if you had a ton of apps, backed them up to the card, wiped data, and all the apps were gone you could just d/l Astro again and restore from your card.
