If all you want is WiFi tethering and not a ROM, then flash Chevy or AdamZ's kernel, and download the WiFi tether app from Blackdroids 9.8 Ultimate Droid rom post.
I have heard good things about Barnacle Wifi Tether v0.3.4 Application for Android | Communication That app allows you to tether regardless of what kernel you are using, or at least it is supposed to hehe.
I very rarely tether though, so I can't personally vouch for it.
If you want WiFi tethering you *will* need a new kernel. The kernel shipped by VZW lacks modules necessary for tethering to support NAT.
If you've rooted, why the heck would you waste your time trying to "make it work anyway" and not flash a new kernel? All of the modded kernels support it! I recommend AdamZ's or ChevyNo1's kernels having run (and still run) them.

Interestingly no longer true - Barnacle apparently does wifi tethering with just root access - no custom kernel. Haven't tried it out personally, yet, though.

custom_backup_list.txt - make a list of files in /system that will survive a nightly install (ringtones, notifications, system apps, wallpapers, whatever)
in Terminal Emulator, set this as your shell command: "/system/xbin/su -c /system/xbin/bash". You get all the features of bash, root access, and you can still use the initial command field for whatever you want (default is adding /data/local/bin to your path)
Ive used it but it seems like it takes 5 minutes of so for it to start working. I was messing with it at work and showing friends and the access point popped up but there wasn't any internet access, about five minutes later I tried to connect to it again and it worked fine.
