    Brightness Hack details?

Can anybody give me the details on the "brightness hack"?

Yes, I know that some roms include "it"
Yes, I know there is an app that does "it"
I'm even aware that piping an integer into /sys/class/leds/lcd-backlight/brightness will manually change the brightness to levels much lower than the default (to the point where under normal lighting conditions, the screen is too dark to read)

What I'm looking for is how this ties in with the automatic brightness. Ideally, I would like to modify the minimum brightness that can be selected manually AND that can be selected by the automatic brightness handling.

(Please no hijacking my thread or responding if you don't have something to contribute. Thanks!)
    Cool CM Tricks
custom_backup_list.txt - make a list of files in /system that will survive a nightly install (ringtones, notifications, system apps, wallpapers, whatever)
in Terminal Emulator, set this as your shell command: "/system/xbin/su -c /system/xbin/bash". You get all the features of bash, root access, and you can still use the initial command field for whatever you want (default is adding /data/local/bin to your path)

It doesn't. You have to use the app to lower the brightness, but there's an option where it auto-lowers every time you turn the screen on.
