2.1 Root for dummies.

I'll start by saying that I'm not the most fluent computer programmer in the world. My only real reason to root is because I want to be able to use my Droid as a wifi hotspot - a possibility only for the rooted.

So is there some kind, patient soul out there who can point me to a place that walks me through the process, step by step, in a way that a 2nd grader could follow? Or post that process here?

Again, I don't need to be able to reposition NASA satellites with the thing. I just want to use the phone as a wifi hotspot.

I understand that going back to 2.01 is necessary and that's fine. I really haven't seen much on 2.1 that changes anything for me personally. I couldn't care less about appearance stuff like animation and galleries. I use this as a tool.

Thanks much and I hope this thread isn't too redundant. If it is, I hope a moderator can just redirect this to the redundancy and shut this down.

I second this. My only desire is to get my droid to act as a wifi hotspot now that I have an iPad. If I could do this, my entire gadget nirvana would be complete. Thank you in advance to anyone who is patient enough to help out!

Here's my problem.

Anytime I get links to this stuff, they start out with big red letters saying how "if you don't know what you are doing, turn back immediately!"

I would be fooling myself if I were to classify myself as someone who knows what he's doing. The one thing I do know is that I can't afford to brick my phone.

I don't think this rooting is for me, I'm afraid.

if you're really afraid then i'd suggest you find someone who can do it for you. it's really not that hard if you follow all the instructions. if you can follow instructions then you're set. just double check everything to make sure you have no typos.

PDAnet will allow you to use your Droid as a wifi connection without root.
