[UPDATE] New settings for stock messaging app

    UPDATE: EVEN MORE COLORS/SETTINS
Now can change how fast LED blinks
    More colors to choose from..

This is the same as stock messaging app, it just adds extended hidden settings.. Credit to koush..

    ok heres the DL link..

    http://www.4shared.com/file/250096546/114c1985/Mms.html

    app is inside zip file..

    heres what it includes:
stock Messaging app with extended preferences
    more notification settings
    led on/off
    - choice of 7 colors for blinking light
    vibrate on/off
    - new vibrate patterns
    -normal
    -medium vibrate
    -long vibrate
    -multiple short vibrate
    -multiple long vibrate

also can have messaging background the stock white color OR black
    can change font size
hide names from messages, [names dont appear only message]
alternate message [changes position of conversation according to sender/recipent]

will have to use adb/terminal emulator to install..

    terminal commands as follows..
place Mms.apk onto the root of your sdcard
    open terminla emulator
    Code:

    $su
    #mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
    #cp /sdcard/Mms.apk /system/app
    #mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
    #reboot
    #

and your all done.. you don't type the # and $ symbols, there already in terminla i just put them so people would understand..

if your phone is not DEODEXED DO THIS AFTER YOUR PHONE REBOOTS, THE MMS.APK WILL FC, THIS IS OK, JUST SELECT TO FC, AND OPEN TERMINAL AND DO THIS..

    $su
    #mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
    #cd /system/app
    #rm Mms.odex
    #reboot

    Thanks!

And for those without adb shell, you can use Root Explorer. First put the Mms.apk on your sdcard:
    1. using Root Explore, navigate to /sdcard/Mms.apk and long press and Copy
    2. navigate to /system/app and click the Mount R/W button (top right)
    3. long press on the Mms.apk and rename it to Mms.apk.bak incase things go wrong and you want to revert
    4. click Paste
    5. long press on the newly pasted Mms.apk and click Permissions - set them 644 (User: Read and Write, Group and Others to just Read. All other boxes should be unchecked)
    6. click Mount R/O
    7. Reboot

    Don't skip any steps!

I'm about to do it - but I'm sure it does.

Back up your messages first - not sure which app is the best for that, but there are a few.

It doesn't seem to delete you messages, no. They are not kept within the apk, so it stands to make sense they are safe.
