What instructions did you follow? Courtesy of Flomaster who did the typing for me....

make sure the file is renamed to update.zip not update.zip.zip
make sure it is placed in the root of the sdcard and not in a folder on the sdcard
THREE steps here in SPRecovery: click install, make sure you click "allow update.zip installation" then click "install update.zip (depreciated)"

use Astro, ES or any file explorer and see what it's named.

The easiest way is to plug the phone into a computer, browse the SD card, and look at the file name.

If you're using windows, you may need to make sure you are not hiding known file extensions (google for directions for this).
    Cool CM Tricks
custom_backup_list.txt - make a list of files in /system that will survive a nightly install (ringtones, notifications, system apps, wallpapers, whatever)
in Terminal Emulator, set this as your shell command: "/system/xbin/su -c /system/xbin/bash". You get all the features of bash, root access, and you can still use the initial command field for whatever you want (default is adding /data/local/bin to your path)
