So how long before we see a rooted DROID?

ehhhh kinda but more involved.... installing a new rom is basically installing a new custom built OS with a new custom look. Usually written by some teenager in a basement or garage with a case of redbull next to him.

the ones ive seen for the G1 are quite stable... no issues with some of more well known ones.

I'm challenging myself to see how long I can use the phone the way it comes...

I think there's going to be several perks to rooting it, but hopefully it will be good enough as is. Who am I kidding? It could always be better. LOL!

I'm surprised to not see Cyanogen's name mentioned here. As far as I know he is sort of king when it comes to rooting android phones (although he sticks to HTC and T-Mobile so we may be out of luck) I'm drooling over his most recent release:

I'm so bummed this won't work on the Droid (well obviously, we don't want to go backwards to Android 1.6) but still, look at all the fixes and improvements:

* Enhanced ramdisk which uses optimal mount options and smart startup

It takes all of the individual hacks, improvements, apps, speed tweaks and bug fixes that are out there and puts them all into one integrated rom that works perfectly... so much better than stock.

All hope is not lost though, someone asked him on Twitter if he would consider porting it or making one for the Droid and he said if someone got him a GSM version (for which there is going to be one very soon in Canada) he would probably do it. we need to start a fund ASAP!

Cyanogen does have the best roms hopefully he see's the potential and decides to release something for the DROID
