i guess my question is this.. i understand that it gives you COMPLETE access to the machine and software, but what is the benefit of doing that? like what can you do with the phone after that you couldn't do before?

Install apps like apps2sd for one along with being able to load custom cooked roms to totally change the looks of the device. For example they may come out with a rom that looks like moto blur or sense ui from htc.
and what's this i see on youtube about using your G1 as a modem? does this enable you to do that with the droid?

I'm not sure if that's a native android 2.0 functionality or if the device must be rooted to do that, can you post a link?
One other term to be aware of "bricked" as in the disclaimer the videos post of "I take no responsibility if you brick your phone" Meaning just that your phone is a brick, doesnt work at all.
Never has happened to me and I do like to run alot of "hacked" hardware/firmware on routers, phones etc, but it is something that can happen and should be thought about.![]()
I just won't mess with it until I get around like 200+ people stating that it worked, then i might consider it.
