Root quits at 'aquiring root shell'

I have a DROID 2 Global which from what I have read is suppose to root easily with Z4Root. Downloaded the program and clicked permanent root. Goes through the first step then during the 'aquiring root shell' step the program disappears taking me back to whatever I was doing before opening Z4Root. Tried several (over ten) times even rebooting phone.

Please help, I am new to rooting. Heard of SuperOneClick but I only have a mac.

Anyways tricks to get Z4 to work would be great.

If you are running gingerbread (2.3) z4 will not work, neither will super one click. You will need to use the Droid 3 One-Click Method (works on Moto phones running gingerbread)

I am on my way into work now but here is a thread where I linked it in the past. Just go through it and I can answer questions periodically or after about 6.

    Would gingerbreak work?

Thanks for your help. I got it rooted. Now like I said I am new to this rooting thing so what do I need to do next to make sure I don't turn my phone into a paperweight. I am especially interested in doing free wifi tethering. How do I do that? Is it more than just installing a certain app?

Well what else were your plans for it? You looking to flash ROMs or just do simple things like remove bloat/extra apps? It really depends on what you want to do how you proceed from here.

Right now I want to keep it mostly simple. I really want wifi tethering and to be able to remove bloatware and snap shot.

Well first and foremost you should make a full back up in recovery.

As far as "removing" bloat, I highly recommend you use an app to freeze them. That way if you ever want to update again you can unfreeze and go from there. And tethering I am not sure about, I have never done it I just know it is tough to do on gingerbread.

What app is good for freezing bloatware? And where can I find some good info about wifi tethering?
