    Talking OK Ok...

I'm an ID10T...I had a Droid1....it was rooted...I gave it to my daughter...unrooted...I now have the DX1...well, I've had it for a while...didn't think I wanted to root it...as I've heard it could be...anyway, when I had my D1 I was able to use it tethered as a modem free on when connected to my laptop. Now that I have the DX1 I want to know if I can do the same thing with it. Can I? Can I root my phone? If so, can I use it as a modem to get internet free as I did with my rooted D1? Sheesh, I hate feeling like a noob.

What OS are you running on the DX? Either way it will be rootable it just depends on what it is running to determine how to root it.

If you look in Settings > About phone > then in there read your Android version.

Ok well I am going to assume that you are running system version .602 or .605 based on your other info. If that is the case then you will need to use the Droid 3 One-Click method. It works on all Moto devices running gingerbread. It is real easy to do but you do need a computer.

    Yes it is.

Here is a discussion thread that is on DF: [How To:] Root Your Droid 3

And here is the actual tool I, along with many others, have used: Pete's Motorola Root Tool

No the DX is not a Droid 3, but the root method was proven to work on all Motorola phone running Android 2.3(gingerbread) so it will work just fine on the DX.
