can you root without a pc?

I'm new to the concept of rooting my phone. I read up a bit on it and would like to give it a shot. My problem is I'm at work without a pc I can use to download the zip file. Sorry if this is dumb, but is there a way to root without plugging into my pc?

Yes, all it requires is that you download the update.zip on to your sd card from the browser on your phone then use astro file manager to move it to the root of your sd card then follow the rest of the steps

No problem, that's how I rooted my friends droid, as long as you have wi fi it will take 10 min tops

Last question. On the root tutorials, I followed the link for the zip file and it says the file doesn't exist anymore. Is there somewhere else that has it?

You just have to use astro to change the name of the file

Um... another question. After I backup/move and rename the file, I booted my phone holding x and power and got the ! Screen but holding volume up and the camera button did nothing after...

I had the same problem I just closed the keyboard and then held the volume + button for a second then pressed the camera button

Haha I'm running into more resistance than I expected. Now it says verification failed when I try to install the update...

Wow, I fell an epic connection that happened to me to, I just googled update.zip for droid root, do not remember the site but hope this little information helps (I'm using my phone to do all of this or else it would be more detailed)
