how long does this take? says found, then says step one of 3 done...then says rebooting phone...........nothin said
After the last reboot, you should be rooted. Underneath the last rebooting message there should be another message that says something like "root successful, you should have root... be careful" (something like that).
The easiest test to check if complete is look in the app draw and you should have the superuser app now. Then download something like root explorer ( or titanium backup, something that requires root) and the first time you run it, it will ask for permission.
Hole rooting process took literally 2-3 minutes..

Since you have a Droid 3, I recommend you mosey on over to the Droid 3 area of the forum. There are several good threads on this topic as well as a lot of good information on the Droid 3.
I used the method shown in the video. I had to download and install all software that was used; the total time was about 12 minutes, including a coffee break, with about 3 minutes used for the actual rooting.
The downloading and installing the software components are very easy and this step was more difficult than the actual rooting step.

done deal fellas....but what is root explorer? I have it on my d2g and never used it..I got titanium back up to but couldn't figure it out
I think you need to do some reading in the forums so you at least gain a basic understanding of the various products that are used with a rooted phone.
If you root your phone, you need to understand the impacts of what you do to the phone while rooted.
