Tried to replace phone.apk, no longer have service

On my verizon moto droid, I unpacked my phone.apk, and tried to replace the images for the on screen keypad with custom ones. I repacked the apk, copied it back to my phone and just pasted in the new phone.apk in the right folder using root explorer. I deleted the old phone.apk (Yes I kept a back up!), and now my phone does not get any service.

I replaced my modified phone.apk with my backup of the original, but I still have no service on my phone at all.

I was a dolt and didn't make a full back up of my phone, and now I just want to make it useful again.

    Can someone please help?

Try downloading whatever ROM you are running. You can pull the Phone.apk from it, and push it to /system/app/ on your phone. Make sure to verify the permissions are correct (chmod 644 or rw-r--r--). Or you can just reinstall the whole ROM again.

Btw I don't think its usually a good idea to modify the phone.apk while booted regularly and basically should only be done through recovery flashing...the phone.apk is one of the most sensitive system apps to modify because it is in continual use...(unless you've done it before, I've never dared to try lol)

I wasn't using a custom ROM. I guess it's time to go find one. Any suggestions?

Chevyno1s simply stunning 5.4 is a good gingerbread os one, and sourcery rom (spelling?) Is a froyo os one with an insane amount of customization features...
Once you go custom you'll never look back lol

Well I tried Chevyno1's, and Bugless GPA 15. Cheyno1 wouldn't boot, and GPA 15 got my phone to reconnect to the cell network, but the ear piece and microphone don't work. It places the call just fine through verizon and google voice, but I can't hear anything and the other person can't hear me.

*EDIT* Did some searching and got calls to work on bugless. Thanks for all the help, you guys saved me from getting a new phone.

With Chevy's rom try flashing a different kernel...flash same way as the roms are except don't wipe anything...your best bet is the lv 900 MHz or mv 900 MHz one...download both trying To flash the lv first, if it doesn't boot again try the mv one
Theres just soooo much customization you can't pass it up lol
Btw if the rom isnt booting by itself, you can flash one of the alternative kernels directly after flashing the rom in recovery without rebooting
