ADB Shell SU - Permission Denied - On a Rooted Phone
I'm confused here. I am using a rooted phone, trying to install PS's Recovery 0.99, and I'm stuck at the step after pushing the files to the phone. The files pushed fine once I put the Droid into USB debug mode, but after:
adb shell
su
I get "Permission denied". I know my phone is rooted. What am I doing wrong? I followed the steps to a T. Any help? I searched, but did not find anything. Thank you in advance.

I'm having the same problem. Just rooted the phone following this guide. I can get root with su just fine with the Android Terminal app, but not with the adb shell.
Edit: Spoke too soon I guess. Just rebooted and now I've got root with adb.

so, does anyone know how to get this to work?

You probably rooted using the easier "superuser update" thing. In order to use SU from ADB you need to install the actual SU file. Search around, this was the original method of doing it. Just follow the instructions for that original method.

Make sure the phone is on and unlocked when you try to run "su" and a window will pop up asking you to allow it to run, check for it to remember, then allow.

I had the little Superuser ninja program in my App Drawer, but never really knew what it was for. I launched that program, and then su access was granted via adb shell. The window popped up on the phone asking me if it was ok, and now it's all good.
On a side note, wireless tether never did work! I tried just about everything, and it wouldn't broadcast the SSID. So I used a 2.1 dump with tethering already installed and now it's working like a charm.
Thanks for all your help everyone!

Yes...they figured it out. read above. You have to answer Yes on the phone to allow access to root. Make sure you check the box below it that says do you want to allow it every time and then you won't have to answer that again...until you flash another rom and wipe all your cache that is.
