Maybe, if you are on 2.2.1 then no, 2.2 then maybe (I think it still works on 2.2 could be wrong as I have never used the app myself).

Nope, but Motocache's ^^ method is easy.
rooted my replacement w/ this. just rename it .apk, install and run. temp root first, then perm root.
