[APP]SuperOneClick v1.6.3 (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App, Get UNLOCK code) - xda-developers
The apk installs on your computer, then follow the instructions. I just used it to root P3Droids release of 2.2.2.

Those "one click wonders" do work occasionally, but I can not tell you how often in the past issues were traced back to a phone having been rooted with them.
I strongly recommend that you do as Guidot suggested. Use the number one link in this signature and you'll have rooted your phone and learned what it all means/does.
Good luck.

+1. I guess I've taken rooting for granted, as i've had to root all my friends phones for them, so I usually use one click roots, then install the ROM's for em. I forget what it was like when all we had was DroidMod Installer and SPRecovery and had to use droidroothelper and solely SBF's to get it. Thanks for reminding me to put myself in a newbie's shoes before firing off an answer. BUT im still thankful that there are easier means to obtain root.![]()

You cannot root without a computer on the newest froyo. Only the one I refered too and superoneclick and both require a computer.

i just rooted my replacement droid yesterday. it came w/ frg83d. i used soup or root w/ absolutely no problems.
google "soup or root official blog". dload the file, install drivers if needed, hit root me, then wait for about 3 or 4 mins. it doesn't give you any indication that it's doing anything but then voila, it's rooted w/ superuser installed. it was remendously easy. then dload rom manager and flash your clockworkmod recover or sprecovery and you are set.
