Are you guys really seeing a marked improvement with compcache on the droid 1? I would think it has enough memory that compcache is just going to slow things down.

256MB of RAM is not "enough memory" for FroYo to function at optimum efficiency. Some people will notice dramatic improvements in overall smoothness, others will have problems. It comes down to the Droid itself. Every Droid is different. If you're running compcache-enabled (and it's working for you) then you should reboot every 48 hours at a minimum.

ChevyNo1.
The Slayher kernel included with Elite 4.1 kept giving me issues. I had used ChevyNo1 with ShadowRom with great success, so when Elite kept giving me issues with Slayher I went over to ChevyNo1.
Now there are no issues and it is running great.
Since you are using BB v0.6.x, you can use the milestone overclock app with the slayher stock kernel (or v1.6 800MHz one in case you've flashed a new kernel) and set your own frequencies and voltages. You can find this app in the BB forums and the threads name is "BB v0.6.x overclock" something. It takes a little effort to set up (nothing that difficult, just a little reading while familiarizizing yourself with the steps involved) but after going through and finding out at what voltages your Droid is stable you will have a far greater appreciation and understanding of some of the little nuances between the kernel and your Droid.
