I've heard that debian has been able to be installed on the G1, is there any way that debian or some other linux operating system can be installed on the droid as well?

A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone.

Why would you want to?
I'm bumping this up because I hope someone has been working on this or has possibly fould a solution. Debian on a droid isn't "another linux os" - that would be a wild understatement. The goal is to have the apt package management system fully functioning (with necessary libs of course) so that a user may chroot into a deb install thereby quickly and painlessly installed binary packages that won't affect the adroid os. The uses of this are vast, from scp to libpcap (tcpdump and tshark) to installing your favorite cli irc client like irssi.
It won't likely be useful to those of you who don't work with linux on a daily basis but for someone like me who is a sys/net engineer, having a full deb install on my droid would save me from having to buy a nokia n900 and tmob unlimited data plan (or a netbook).
If no one else is working on this I may take up the project with my free time at work.
I guess it would be interesting to see where this goes, altough I wouldn't have a huge use for it. My biggest amazment is that saurik did it, because I've always known him as the cydia guy
I've been checking this thread an others like it on a daily basis in hopes that someone with some serious talent can make this happen..
If you can't see the difference between android and debian, take my word for it its a big step up
Even if you know nothing of Linux... things like a media player With an EQ, dosbox,etc.. would be worth the root.. **** even Win3.11 would run on the droid
I wish I were able to make it happen -- till then ill keep checking these threads
Watch this space:
Droid does Debian!
Looks like taz has gotten it working and will post a write up soon!
