Linking between SDcard and internal storage

It seems to me like it should be possible to store media files, like movies, on the internal memory (8GB, on my Droid X, about 6 free ATM), and set up a symlink on the SDCard that points to it so that the media players that otherwise only look @ the SDcard will be pointed there instead.

Is this possible? My unix/linux skills are a bit rusty

No, Internal storage is for app install and OS.
    Users cannot access it.

Root does not give you access to the internal storage.

You sure about that? I've been able to copy files to and from /data just fine, and running df says I have a bit over 6GB free there, which would imply that it is the internal storage.

Because, as I just found out, it's a FAT32 file system on the SD card. bah!

    On the other hand.....

I found the solution to my problems (well, this one problem, anyway):

Meridian Media Player Autonomy ~ Android Application v1.4.0 By Romulus Urakagi Ts'ai (Sais Workshop)

it allows you to check both the SD card AND onboard storage. I tried it and it worked!
