Droid X 2.3 Rooting Questions

I have been wanting to root my droid for some time, but I have always been held back. I know the possible issues and the advantages and disadvantages of rooting my droid. Now all that is holding me back is the fear that I might make a costly mistake with no way of turning back and that I do not know how to do a root with Gingerbread.

Concern Questions:
1) Can I save my phone if it gets bricked?
2) How often do droids get bricked during the rooting process?
3) When I root, does all of my data get erased?
4) Can I get in trouble with Verizon with a rooted phone? (From just me using it)

How To Questions:
1) Can I root my phone right now even though 2.3 is still new?
2) How would I go about rooting my phone the long way?
3) How would I go about rooting my phone the short way?
4) Which way is the more safe route for rooting?
5) Which route do you advise that I take?

As far as rooting goes, its not really the process that has people ending up with a shiny new paperweight, its what's done incorrectly afterwards. I totally understand your concerns (used to have them myself) but, should you decide to root, you have 152,000+ members to help. Rooting 2.3.340 is very simple. I for one would love to help you and answer any questions that you have!
Btw, no apologies are necessary for asking questions, we actually encourage it as we were all new too...once upon a time!

The short way to root is using a program like z4root, it installs all the files needed to give you the superuser permissions. As far as gingerbread you can be rooted and get the ota for it as long as you stay stock and keep all your original files in place. Now after you root you can replace the stock recovery with clockwork which allows you to backup your stock phone so if you install a custom rom its very simple to go back. Make sure you read everything on rooting and flashing roms before you do anything to minimize the chances of bricking your phone.

I'm still very new with my droid x but I did root it before the update. Now I'm having problems with my phone and need it warrantied but need to unroot it first. So my question is how do I unroot my phone even though right now its really not rooted anyways because I haven't rerooted since the update. Can someone please help???

How did you root your phone and what troubles are you having?

If you installed the OTA update, then you are unrooted. Plain and simple. You shouldn't even see the Superuser app in the app drawer anymore. There should be nothing left to do to unroot your phone.

when I first rooted my phone everything was fine I didn't have any problems but then it got wet and now i'm not recieving text messages and people are recieving them and my phone freezes up often.

I can still see the superuser guy where all my apps are and on one of my home screens

Did you use you z4 root to root your phine?
If you did, you can unroot using it also.

Or... If you do not care about what you have saved on your phone, you can just flash it and it will be at its original state. You can always back up your data if you want.

No I didn't know about the z4root when I did it....I did it through my labtop creating folders but don't remember exactly how I did it...lol. Anyways the only thing I really care about saving is my pics and video's I have...Can I save those on my memory card and if so how?
