It is definitely possible - and done quite often.

SPRecovery is what you are looking for. It replaces the stock recovery console with one that has a lot more features. Once you have the console installed you can use it to make a 'nandroid backup'.

    Hello,

As per the first post in this thread, I have successfully installed recovery, the new wlan driver, and the new kernel.

I have a small issue however: For some reason, whenever I connect the phone to a computer, upon disconnecting the "USB Connected" notification does not go away. It does not seem to affect functionality, however it is somewhat annoying. I have USB debugging disabled right now. Is there a solution to this problem?

Interestingly, I plugged the phone into a public computer as a test (I wanted to rule out drivers on my own computer for ADB causing the problem), and I am promted to install ADB drivers. I can't, as I have an unpriviledged account on the computer, but should Windows even detect the phone's ADB brigde (I suppose that is the right term) with USB debugging disabled?

Thanks for the efforts on making this possible, wifi tethering is quite nice.

I have two questions that kind of have to do with this thread (sorry if theyve already been answered, 40 pages got boring pretty quick :/)
    1. Is it possible and how would I install android-wifi-tether with the 2.1 OTA update? (or some other official release)
    2. If it is possible, where could I get an official release to flash to?

    Thanks!

There is no official 2.1 release. The only official release is 2.0.1 that you already have.

The process of getting wifi tethering to work is
1). Re-flash the linux kernel with one that supports bridging
    2). Install the android-wifi-tether app

You should be able to do those two steps on any rom, including the stock 2.0.1, assuming that you have root.

    2. If it is possible, where could I get an official release to flash to?
Again, there is no "official" release. if you want wifi tethering, you are going off the motorola/verizon path and installing a custom kernel that somebody made for hacked droids.

    You have two options:
A). You can install JUST the kernel (and kernel module). Your phone will be almost exactly the same, except you'll have wifi tethering (and probably the ability to overclock as well)
B). You can install a full ROM that a developer has packaged up. It will include a new kernel as well as a bunch of small tweaks, probably some new apps, maybe a theme, etc. Read the release notes for a rom to see what it includes.
    Cool CM Tricks
custom_backup_list.txt - make a list of files in /system that will survive a nightly install (ringtones, notifications, system apps, wallpapers, whatever)
in Terminal Emulator, set this as your shell command: "/system/xbin/su -c /system/xbin/bash". You get all the features of bash, root access, and you can still use the initial command field for whatever you want (default is adding /data/local/bin to your path)

All U.S. Android phones to receive Android 2.1, but some will require a wipe – Android and Me
I guess I saw that article and jumped the gun and assumed that because we'll get it eventually, there must be an official copy floating around somewhere lol.
In that case I think I'll wait until the OTA starts rolling out and see where the tethering game goes from there (love those live wallpapers and multitouch!)
Thanks for pointing that out, though, especially with how stupid I must have seemed :/

    Just so you know...

When the OTA 2.1 rolls out, it's likely we'll lose the ability to "root" the device. (for awhile anyway, until somebody hacks it again). That means that you won't be able to get wifi tether once you have the official 2.1.

There are a number of UNofficial roms that will give you live wallpaper and multitouch - and some roms that have 2.1. Nothing that is "official", yet.

So if you want wifi tethering, there's no reason to wait for 2.1. And you can always decide to go "back" to the OTA updates later if you want (rooting and installing roms are not permanent)

Had my Droid two weeks. The big reason I want to root it is for tethering but I don't want to lose that when 2.1 comes along which I do want to update to. I tried the limited version of PDANET today and it works awesomely with my Macbook Pro. It does the tethering via USB but I prefer that for a few reasons. Don't have to secure the wi fi signal (isn't one), it charges my Droid as I use it via the USB plus I am assuming that since the full version is expensive ($30) it will quickly be updated if needed to run under 2.1 when that finally appears. (I'm waiting to buy the full version until that is confirmed.) Plus there is no root required for those people that don't feel comfortable doing that just yet (me).
