Silencing Text Message or Ringtone sound when ringing?

If my phone is ringing and I just want to silence the ringer, but not ignore the call, how can I do this? I don't think pressing the volume rocker works.

I tried it and it works for a Call but not on a Text Message

I hate that when I'm doing something with the phone and I get a text/IM or whatever triggers the text tone I can't just hit buttons to stop the actual tone. Every other phone I've had does this which is perfect when I'm in a SMS or IM conversation with someone because as I type it vibrates and then skips the audio tone. I hate when I'm IMing with someone with the Droid and it does the IM tone each and every time when I'm clearly on the phone and not going to miss anything nor do I require some sort of audio notification as if the phone were across the room... with me typing on it.

I have a goat for my SMS/IM tone so this can be somewhat embarrassing but not offensive but I hate muting it all the time for no reason so I don't. If I'm on it I don't need to hear it though. Everyone else seems to have figured this out save for Google/moto.

Try going into the settings>sound and display>ringer volume and make sure the "use incoming call volume for notification" in UNCHECKED, then set your separate volume level for each.

I sometimes use a 3rd app (Volume Control) to control all the different volumes on the phone. I keep it on the screen for easy access.

Same problem... I want my volume up.. but occasionaly want to silent an incoming text

I'm bumping every tread I can find on this subject... there has to be a solution... There has to be a way to silent an incoming notification with one touch of an external button... If i'm having a conversation with sombody I don't want to have to take my phone out of my pocket to silence my text song...

The power/hold button should silence any sound from an incoming call or incoming text. It silences the ringer, it does not send the caller to voice mail (like the slider does on the answer screen).
