Interesting Gmail/Notification window issue since update??

I'm having a new issue that may not be a big deal to some but is driving me nuts. Whenever I get a notification saying I have a new Gmail I used to click that and it would take me to my inbox. I could then choose which emails to read and which to leave. Now for no apparent reason it takes me immediately to one of my unread emails. This is frustrating because I send/receive hundreds of emails per day and some are quite a bit more pressing than others so upon taking a moment to access my email I like to be the one to decide what order I attack them in. Is there a setting somewhere I'm not seeing that allows me to control this? I don't recall making any changes to cause this and can only think that maybe the update caused this. Ideas? This is really frustrating for me.

I am also having this same issue.

I look at the notification. If it's an email I close the window and click on my email. I don't click on any of the notifications.

And I could be wrong but I believe it worked that way before the update too.
