I knew a positive comment thread couldn't possibly last too long, but I didn't think it would be the OP to put the hammer to it.

I put ESE81 on my DEV Droid 1 and FRG22D on my other. Then I listened to the clips using a good set of amplified speaker with subwoofer. On ESE81 the highs are perfectly crisp at all volumes and all of the tones are clear. On FRG22D, most of it sounds good, but the highs have a discernible distortion (like a buzz of sorts). Then I flashed FRG01B (the original 2.2 with the issue) on the DEV Droid (the same one that was perfect with ESE81). Then that phone sounded just like the FRG22D phone. I even disabled all "stagefright" options in build.prop on the FRG22D phone and it did not make the issue go away.

The distortion is quite mild and without another reference (like an ESE81 phone playing the exact same clip) you might think that's just the way that song sounds. In an HTTP stream the quality might even be low enough already that it doesn't matter at all and its only exposed when listing to a very high quality clip from a FLAC source (like the example clips in the bug report).

Anyway, if FRG22D does have "the fix" in it (I'm not sure how to tell at the moment) then the new sound processing isn't as good as ESE81 even with the bug fixed.
Wow, great work! I thought it sounded a bit off compared to before. Hopefully they get it back and comparable to before, whatever that requires.

Ah well. I tried to be positive. The evidence just didn't bear it out.

Reviving this thread to see what folks are doing with the problem these days? I was non-rooted during this discussion but have since rooted. Now I'm wondering what my best bet is for good Pandora sound quality. Should I change the build.prop stagefright http entry to false (right now all 4 stagefright entries are true)? Any news?

What ROM are you running? I think most ROMs that are from the latest build have this issue resolved ... I am running Sapphire 1.1.1 and Pandora sounds great - plus there are extra setting built in that allow you to tweak the audio quality (DSP Manager).

Thanks for the reply. I'm running UD8 and it does have DSP Manager, but that doesn't fix the problem. UD8 is from the latest build. Are you listening to Pandora on a real stereo system or headphones? On headphones things sound fine, but on a real stereo (my car) the bass is missing and some highs are tinny on every other song or so. FRG22D didn't fix this (see earlier posts from MotoCache in this thread), but folks are doing things with StageFright to improve it. On Sapphire, can you look at build.prop and look at the http entry and see if it's true or false?

Ah, I see - strictly headphones here for me.

All the stagefright settings in sapphire are true, BTW.
Prior to this build, I did change the http to false and noticed a HUGE difference, but again, I only use headphones ...

That helps a lot though. My main concern was whether or not to attempt changing the build.prop or not with this latest build. I guess it's worth a shot, but I've read so much about what it breaks. Thanks for the replies.
