Facebook sync clarification

What exactly does facebook sync do when I have it enabled to sync?? Is it just syncing with contacts I have that are also linked with facebook and updating if they change their phone number or profile picture?? How often is it syncing and is it worth just turning off?? Is it giving me facebook notifications on my phone? The only ones I seem to get are when I have a new message - never when someone writes on my wall, etc. And do I need this on to see if I have a new message even? I can always set this up so notifications come via email.

Also, is there a way to determine when google contacts, calander, etc. sync or does it do it on its own schedule??
