What is in a Build Number anyway?

I read somethign that made sense the other day about build numbers. They are somewhat sequential. ESE85 or FRG01B? The articla said that the first letter represents the code name of the current build...eclair or froyo? The second letter represents a R for release candidate and S for stable? The third character represents hundredths for the last two digits that grow sequentially as builds come out until it reaches 99, the the third letter then goes up one letter.

Now...I have no way of tell how reliable that artitcle was but I went back in time and noticed the build numbers have always followed this scheme.

Today I see where we have links to the official OTA rollout of the 2,2 Froyo and the build number is still FRG01B, indicating it is still a release candidate, not a stable build. So my question is, is the info paraphrased above correct about build numbers or is someone trying to pass the leaked FRG01B as the official OTA release?

I suppose there is a third theory. The release candidate is still in testing phase and google's release of FRG01B is part of that testing. How do we provide feedback if we are part of that BETA team without even knowing it? LOL
