Here's the story:
Bought my Droid the day it came out in November, and I loved it!
Anyway, I went to Bonnaroo (music festival) and the night before the festival started (I volunteered so I was there early), I accidentally got it wet
I let it dry out sufficiently, but the little dude was toast :'(
Luckily I've been paying $10 a month to BestBuy for the protection plan, and so I take it to Geeksquad to see what they can do. I was worried because:
1) It as just a spill (which is covered), but it was a pretty big spill
2) I had it rooted and had froyo installed
So I give it to them and they just got back to me. This was the worst part, I had to wait from the 19th til now to get it back (and yes, it has been AWFUL)
Anyway, the device was dead and it can't be repaired... HOWEVER, it was still covered under warranty and so they did what they call a "junkout" and I get to go pick up a new one
As a joke I decided to ask if I could upgrade to the Droid X, but the guy told me to hold on and he'd check. He goes to the mobile station and I CAN USE THE MONEY I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN FOR THE DROID (msrp) ON A DROID X!!
[to clarify, I will be getting a $599 giftcard at bestbuy to use on the droid, but I will be transferring it toward a purchase of the droid x]
I have to go tomorrow to the store to preorder it, but I'm getting an early upgrade for maybe $20

That is one thing good about Best Buy's protection plan. If it can't be fixed you get a credit for the full amount you spent.

The question is, wlil it be rooted and as customizeable with as big a user/hacker base as the Motor Droid? I'm thinking not quite. good luck!

Cool..... Good luck with ur new phone bro.

That's great man! I have Best Buy's protection plan for my Droid and will be doing the same thing for my X on the 15th. Other than having to wait for them to try to repair it, it seems much better than Verizon's insurance.

Have fun with ur new phone. I'm definitely not jealous

I'm curious about their replacement policy now, ie whether I could "accidentally" break my droid every 6 months to get the latest and the greatest. If so, I might have discovered the droid holy grail
You got lucky. Plain and simple. A rep decided to make you a happy customer. This doesn't happen to most people, you only get what you pay for. I've seen many people try to get upgrades to a newer model phone and 99% of the time it doesn't work. So consider yourself a lucky person, I wouldn't try it again. Well, you can always try but don't count on it working again.

Nothing about luck at all. That is how Best Buys protection works. I had it on my XBOX 360 and got the RROD. Took it in and they verified it and they gave me credit for what I originally paid for it. So I really didn't have to buy another 360 if I didn't want to. Oh and this happened on two different consoles. Each time I was refunded my original purchase amount on a gift card.
