Is there a way to edit the contacts on the droid?
I have seen reference to a edit mode in contacts, but cannot find it.
Is it possible to remove contacts, rename some of contacts, etc.?

Go into contacts, click on the contact you want, menu > edit contact
to delete long press on the contact, then delete
to rename edit the contact then edit the name of the contact
Resistance is futile.

Thank you for your help
What also is nice, if you're synced with Google of course, is the ability to edit the contacts on your PC using the Google Contacts page which can be found here http://google.com/contacts
i can't find a 'menu' tab after i have clicked on the contact
pressing and holding on a contact does nothing. i take it by menu tab you mean the button icon that looks like a ledger or list? in a contact, that does nothing. i am aware i can edit from google but i want also to be able to do it from my phone. thanks for the help.
i'm also having trouble with renaming. i have changed the name on a contact at least 15 times and it remains the old name in my contacts list. this is driving me batty!
Go into your contacts list by opening the app draw and clicking Contacts.
Long press on a contact brings up a menu with
"View Contact
Call contact
Text contact
Add to favorites
Edit contact
Delete Contact"
Click Edit Contact and do what you need to.
Or click the contact, hit the menu button, and click edit contact.
I just used both methods to confirm I'm not seeing things and the changes went through immediately (make sure you click the "Done" button when you're done)
