On the back of the section that is touchscreen, there seems to be one of the removable films to protect it from scratches... Is this actually removable? I see little airbubbles in mine so it makes me think it is unimportant...

I removed mine, back is shiny, though it kind of made it easier for the phone to slide open o.o

yes, it is removable. There is another post (maybe on this forum? i believe) that contains this info.
Actually i didn't even notice it was there until earlier today. It removes rather easily and looks better afterwards. Slider moves much easier, but still enough resistance to keep it closed.
On the other post, someone actually posted an online chat they had with a Moto rep asking if it was supposed to be remove and the rep said yes
