Text Messaging vs. Gtalk

So, I switched to the $5 text plan with Verizon and just for fun, I called the Verizon rep maybe 8 or 9 times and each time, I got a different answer...

Is the Google Talk ap thats installed count as part of the 250 text message? 1/2 of the rep said yes, while 1/2 of them say no.

Isn't that considered part of the data usage. I know with a BB it's data.

Just use Gtalk and them go to ypur MY Verizon account and see if it added a text msg in the count. That should tell you.

get google voice, it has free texting as long as you do it through the google voice app instead of telling it to send you texts

This seems to be a question that comes up quite a bit (with IM on the droid in general). I know that several of the IM clients specifically let you know that the use data and not SMS. I think it's a safe assumption that Gtalk on the droid is the same way.

I imagine this concern stems from the messaging client modern day non-smartphone phones come with from Verizon. They use SMS because the majority of people probably don't have a data plan with their phones (I didn't on my ENV), but it allowed them the ability to use AIM/Yahoo!/MSN. Given the fact that we're all paying for a data plan on the driod, it doesn't make sense to have the Gtalk app use SMS versus data.
