Rotating and Saving a Portrait Photo

This should be easy but is proving confusing. If you take a portrait (lengthways) photo, then the actual photo is sideways (this is confusing because when you rotate the phone it moves but if you email it or post it then it's sideways.

I am looking for a way to rotate the photo and save it landscape. Photoshops app has a rotate but unless I'm doing something wrong, after I save it, it's still sideways ?

Any suggested decent pic editors for rotate and crop ?
