Can't Access Contacts From Messaging

When texting, I go to MESSAGING, NEW MESSAGE, But when I touch the "TO" field, my contacts do not appear. I know they are there since I access them for my phone function. I have to TEXT by starting in "Contacts" which is ok, but slow. I also don't like HANDCENT APP since it appears to slow down my rig. Is something wrong with my contact format? If I have to I'll go back to Handcent. but.... Any feedback for this newbie would be appreciated.

Start typing a name or number and matches will show up...

Thanks for the quick reply CONQSOFT, you are right, my kid's DROID works as you describe. My doesn't. If I type Jill (which I know is in my contacts)for example it will show Jill then show the numeric keyboard equivalant (5455) but won''t reach into the contacts as my kid's does. I'm outgunned by a 14 year old...

Make sure that in your contacts you have the phone number you want to text to labeled as mobile. I could not send a text to a person who was in my contact list in the method previously described (entering the name while in the text app) and when I checked I had mislabeled the number as home. When I changed the label it worked fine.
