Where can I find information about Android

I am going to be writing a paper about android. Its for one of my college classes and my group is doing a comparison between android, iphone, blackberry, and the new windows mobile 7. I picked android since I have an android phone an know a good bit about it already. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew of any good sites to find the history of android an how it came about. I know I can google it but I figured I'd ask here since I know a lot of people here can find or have links to really good information that would help me out a lot.

Are you looking for information on the hardware or the software?
The Android is made up of three main components:

1 - The Motorola Droid is the hardware platform. Depending on how deep you want to get into the history, spend some time poking around at the Motorola web site reviewing their specifications for the phone. This may lead to other sites of interest. Processor, I/O used, internal connections, etc.
2 - The Android Operating System is a Google product and as such you might do well to spend some time on their site looking for information on the O/S.
3 - Verizon provides the 3G infrastructure used by the phone. How much of this needs to be included?

The depth of this project could turn overwhelming in a short time depending on exactly what you are looking for. Good luck, this could make an interesting read when it is done.

Unfortunately the best place to find all the info in one place is Wikipedia. They have a really nice page on it. Most professors will not allow Wikipedia. At least I know that mine wont. So if you find things there, your best bet is just to follow the source and cite it from there. There is all kinds on stuff on the history. Take a look at it. It is really good.

Yeah I'm focusing more on android the os. Now I will mention the droid in it but yeah its more on the os because android is on a lot of phones. Basically how it came about from google and how it got started.

Well, that narrows down the search criteria by 2/3 right off the bat.
The Google Search Engine is your friend, use it, the information is out there.

it's a real shame that google doesn't have a page for users of the OS to reference. nothing about basics, what different icons on the status bar mean, what and how the LED notifier functions, pretty much no user manual....
simply including a help link on the phone isn't as good as getting it on paper or a web page dedicated and easily accessible on an 'old-fashioned' computer ....

Both VZW and Motorola have User's Manuals on the respective web sites under the support sections. These are the same UMs so just go for whichever tickles your fancy. They include all of the information on the basic ICONs and other functions that you identified. Not sure if Google has anything buried on their site.

thanks ... this has the potential for being helpful.

but honestly, it's the Android brand that should be putting up it's own help pages on the main Android site ...
