I was wondering if you could put the phone in airplane mode yet still use gps???
This would def save battery if it worked.
Any suggestions or comments are welcomed
Airplane mode kills all radio from the phone. Disable WiFi, Blueooth, Syncing, and you should be OK. There are all sorts of cool little devices out there that let you charge your phone without traditional devices....

You could search for "compass" or "gps" in the market. There also are geocaching apps. However, I learned while being a passenger in the back seat of a car that GPS navigation for an hour or so pretty much drained my battery. It goes fast. I don't know if you are backpacking or will have a car to recharge your phone handy.
Google Sky could be fun at nighttime. My Tracks shows where you have been. Hiker Pro also shows promise. Those 3 are all free in the market.
oh Droidlight as well...so you choose the correct leaves after the sun goes down!
If you apply a rom or theme - backup first!
If you don't know how to backup...Stop until you do.
hint: I name my backups like this: sg6.0_20100428 or ss4.2_20100626 to easily find them later. rom and date.

Thanks, I actually have some of those, have my tracks, a light, and the sky app.

You need data to download the maps, I think.... Solar powered would be cool, it all depends on how long you'll be out.
Try MapDroyd and download the maps for offline use later.
K will look into that
I've heard that the data connection is only used to get map data. The phone will talk to actual satellites to get your position super-imposed on that map. So this is true then? I can download the maps and use them with the GPS even if I'm out of 3G range?
